About The Gilstraps
Traveling With The Gilstraps
At the time Being Amanda - In Europe was published, the
Gilstraps (Mary, Greg, Andrew, Amanda, and William) resided in
Anthem, Arizona. Although Amanda and Greg were the primary
authors of Being Amanda - In Europe, the production of this
publication was a family affair. Andrew edited the final
manuscript, while Mary added special touches and remained
the family’s spiritual inspiration. Will kept everyone laughing
and served as the chief technology officer and web-page design
consultant.
A bit about the primary authors at the time of initial publication:
Amanda Gilstrap, age 21, is a college student at Franciscan
(Catholic) University of Steubenville, Ohio. Following her
semester abroad, she is back on campus pursuing her nursing
degree. She is scheduled to graduate in May of 2010. Her long-
term goal is to continue her education by acquiring a related
master’s degree. She still spends summers and holidays at
home in Arizona. A graduate of Northwest Christian High
School in Phoenix, Amanda was a member of the National
Honor Society and earned eight varsity athletic letters in track
and soccer.
Greg W. Gilstrap, age 47, currently serves as the Immediate
Past Chairman of the Executive Committee and Board of
Directors of the Arizona Tourism Alliance, and teaches the
senior-level Tourism Management course at Arizona State
University. Previously, Greg served as a founding partner of
what is now known as Madden Media, Cabinet Secretary of the
Arizona Office of Tourism, and as the Director of the Kansas
Travel and Tourism Division. After leaving the Arizona Office of
Tourism, he was CEO of Nichols Gilstrap, Inc. for eight years.
The Phoenix-based firm was a national leader in providing
strategic planning, marketing, and research services to the
travel and tourism industry. Early in his career, Greg worked as
a television producer/anchor and appeared in Screen Actors
Guild speaking roles in the motion picture Kansas and
television mini-series Cross of Fire. Greg has been a featured
presenter at many conferences on tourism, including the Travel
Industry Association of America’s Annual Travel Outlook Forum
and the National Conference of State Legislators’ Conference
on Tourism. A graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington,
Greg has served as an Executive in Residence at Temple
University, as an instructor for the Purdue University/Destination
Management Association International’s professional
certification program, and as a guest professor at New York
University. Married for 27years, Greg resides in Anthem, Arizona
with his wife (Mary), three wonderful children (Andrew, Amanda
and Will), and two intellectually challenged cats (Faith and
Stella).
